Kaikohe Intermediate School, Kaikohe

The renovation of a classroom at Kaikohe Intermediate School was the ideal oppportunity to ensure that the design of the carpet layout reflected the local personality.  Eleven year 8 students did two workshops to do just that resulting in this design being realised.  They took inspiration from the tukutuku panels in their marae and the stories they know from their ancestors to develop the concept.

In the words of the students, "The green represents papatuanuku (the land), and our muanga (firstborn) and life.  The blue means ranginui (the sky).  The grey is all about the people.  Each tile represents each person that has been there before and also those who will come after us.  The poutama pattern represents the stairway to heaven and learning.  Each step means you are getting better each day and moving up".

The students used Shaw Pacific Waimean Volcanic, teamed with Hyper Green and Hyper Blue to complete the look.
