Waiariki Institute of Technology, Maori Studies Building

This well-crafted fitout by APR Architects is a clever translation of the symbolism of Maori culture into spatial design.  Although designed for Maori Studies, the space is intended to be used by all cultures; two of the main themes of the symbols are the sharing of knowledge, and emphasis on catering for the diversity of the campus population.

A curving central spine runs through the building, with rooms on either side functioning as strengthening ribs.  This spine is visually represented by a wide continuous band of Shaw Carpet Colour Plank Tile in the brilliantly rendered Saxony Blue.  The space surrounding the spine is Shaw Carpet Tile Overlay, with a custom colour stripe to match the spine.  Chosen for its linear design, Overlay was supplied in the new 18x36 rectangular format, enabling it to be laid in a weave-like herringbone pattern.   The Overlay is accented by spot colours in Shaw Tru Colours Clear Red and Colour Plank Saxony Blue 18x36.
