Changing Places

Changing Places is a UK initiative to support people with all levels of disability.  It provides a fully accessible toilet and changing facility for those that cannot use standard accessible toilets.  Specific users are those with profound and multiple learning disabilities, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Spina Bifida, Motor Neurone Disease and those with an acquired brain or spinal injury.

Brought to New Zealand by Jenn Hooper, who is driven by her passion to provide the best care for her disabled daughter, Changing Places New Zealand received the support from businesses and the community to make the first changing places in New Zealand a possibility.

Specific products are sourced locally and internationally to ensure the demands of providing a high level of care are exceeded. Some of those considerations are:

The right equipment
- a height adjustable adult-sized changing bench/shower plinth
- a tracking hoist system, or mobile hoist
- a screen or curtain to allow privacy
Enough space
- adequate space in the changing area for the disabled person and up to two carers
- a centrally placed toilet with room either side
A safe and clean environment
- wide tear off paper roll to cover the bench
- showering facilities over the changing bench/shower plinth
- a non-slip floor.

The non-slip floor was provided by Jacobsen and laid by Carpet Court Hamilton.  "The selection of Tarkett iQ Granit and Tarkett Granit Safety was based on a foundation of quality, service and the ability to provide vibrancy through unique colour selections, said Nick Foster, Commercial Territory Manager.  Longevity and the benefit of low ongoing care and maintenance requirements offer the client a versatile and cost effective floor covering."
